There’s a bunch of us, probably about 20 of us, that worked seven days a week at the theater and studied together for about 10 years. Mako was the artistic director then, and he kind of took us under his wing. The cool thing about East West Players was that it gave you a soft place to land. We made our own rules, me and my two brothers. They were so busy working and making a living and putting food on the table that they really didn’t care. Back then she worked at a sewing factory, and we worked on our vegetable farm. My mother’s from Japan and her English wasn’t very good. You guys are performing?” So I moved to LA and I joined East West Players. It is very moving and I think it’s events like this and it’s comments like that that really bring home what it means, and I have a different appreciation of that now because of this and because of you making that comment.”Īgena explained that not as many people watched Gilmore Girls when it first aired on the WB, so the recognition for the show's diversity felt like “a slow burn.The thought of me wanting to act was not an option when I was growing up, so I was getting my teaching credential. We get very excited when we see people of color, and especially Asian-Americans, onscreen. She continued: “I didn’t understand that that was a thing until now because things are changing. "I just related to their stories and they were my heroes because I didn’t have that, and I didn’t know that I missed it.” “When I grew up, I looked at Caucasian people and I just thought that I was them, I think," Agena admitted. She then asked the actors if they looked up to any Asian-Americans on TV growing up. After noting that there still aren’t enough Asian-Americans on television, one fan thanked Agena and Kuroda for being “two strong, beautiful, intelligent women” for her daughter to look up to. ![]() 21, the topic of representation came up during a Q&A portion of a panel that included Agena and Kuroda.
